Obituary of Phyllis Ann Marks
Phyllis Ann (Whinrey) Marks was born January 28, 1936, in Los Angeles California to Lona
Reetha (Kirkland) Whinrey and Charles Lee Whinrey. She passed from this life on May 23, 2024
in Upland, California at the age of 88 years, as a result of congestive heart failure.
Phyllis was a beloved wife to Gordon Harold Marks. They were wed on June 25, 1955, and
enjoyed nearly 69 years together. Together, they raised two children, Kenneth Lee Marks, who
preceded her in death in 2015, and Karen Lynn (Marks) Ginn. They provided a loving, faith-filled
home where their family could thrive.
Phyllis received an associate degree and was trained as a dental assistant. Once she had a
family, she devoted her life to loving and serving her family. She was an extraordinary
seamstress, creating lovely clothing for her family. She lovingly designed and sewed wedding
dresses for her four granddaughters. She also crocheted beautiful blessing blankets for all her
great grandchildren. Phyllis could be counted on to always be there whenever she was needed,
and she set the bar high for what a wife, mother, grandma, and great grandma should be.
Phyllis was raised as a Methodist, but in 1972 she became a member of The Church of Jesus-
Christ of Latter-day Saints. She faithfully attended and served in the church from the time she
was baptized. She and Gordon were sealed for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles Temple
one year after joining the church. She served in numerous callings in the church, including
Relief Society President, Young Women Leader, Primary Teacher, and Temple Worker. She put
her talents to good use organizing and sewing roadshow and dance festival costumes. She
lived her religion and was an example of a Christlike daughter of God.
She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband and family. Together they cruised the world,
visiting many countries. Vacations were always an important part of the Marks family life. An
especially wonderful trip was when she and Gordon decided to celebrate their 50 th anniversary
by taking their entire family on an Alaskan cruise.
The world will not be the same without her, but heaven has gained an angel. She is most
certainly enjoying a heavenly reunion with her many loved ones who passed before her,
including her parents, her son, and her three great-grandsons Grayson Ginn, Miles Ginn, and
Steven Ginn. She is survived by her daughter Karen Ginn (Dave), and their children Colleen
Cosme (Jeffery), Melissa Taylor (Jason), Ryan Ginn (Brittany), and Heather Cluff (Nathan). She
is also survived by Ken’s wonderful wife Penny and their children, Travis Marks (Rebecca),
Amanda Hendrickson (Scott), and Cameron Marks (Elisabeth). In addition, she is survived by
her twenty-one great grandchildren, Tyler, Claire, Matthew, Katherine, and Emily Cosme; Ian
(Korah), David, Ava, Charlotte, and Victoria Taylor; Lincon and Hudson Ginn; Alexis, Zachary,
Evelyn, and Chase Cluff; Jane and Ethan Marks; Madeline and Logan Hendrickson; and
Kennedy Marks. Each one brought so much joy to her life. She never stopped loving and
serving her family. We learned so much from her and hope to continue her loving legacy of faith,
family, and service.
